What will a Greater Rockaway do for me?

Good Question.

Our initiative's first task is to understand the needs and concerns of the community. The Community Listening Sessions will provide the forum for sharing and collaboration and will be the initial phase of the open space waterfront vision and plan.

Come share your ideas and experiences in creating a renewed vision of the Rockaways.

To RSVP and learn more, contact Carrie Fox at (718) 327-5919 or email us at cfox@rwalliance.org.

Topics under consideration are:

Q: What modes of transportation or pathways do you use to get around? Cars, bicycles, public transportation?

Q: Where do you go for outdoor recreation? How far is the closest park or access to the waterfront? Is it safe for the general public?

Q: Are there existing programs that utilize outdoor parks that should shape how your area is defined?

Q: Are there under utilized areas or open spaces in your neighborhood?

If you're unable to attend these sessions in person and want to stay in the loop, stay connected using our Dialog Blog.

Dialog Blog

Welcome to the dialog blog for The Plan for a Greater Rockaway. This is a place for the community to share ideas and comment on the planning process.

We will be posting the comments posted by the public. Please feel free to comment on a blog entry or email us your questions to post.

Biking to work?

Oct 20, 2010 by Linda Wishney

There should be a bike path under the L  track of the A line throughout Rockaway, so people can have a safe place to ride. The city does something called "Summer Streets" every Saturday in August where major streets in Manhattan are closed off to cars. At first seems ludicrous but people have been getting out and taking over streets for more activities. It was started in Bogota, Columbia and now Montreal, Stockholm and other cities have done the same in the Summer months. It's really catching on and we should consider it if we want to be "in the mix".

Ferry Service & Access Points

Oct 20, 2010 by Mari Razzaq

The Mayor is trying to address climate change, coastal flooding and storm surges so why aren't we focusing on emergency evacuation for the residents of the Rockaways. If there were a push for this we might just get a few boat launches that could serve the community in cases of evacuation but also for ferry service AND recreational man powered boating access points on Jamaica Bay. If everyone made recommendations to the NYC Dept of City Planning's website for Vision 20/20 (Comprehensive Waterfront Plan) we might just get some designated launches this time around...

Another plan.......How is this one different?

Sep 28, 2010 by Jeanne DuPont

So you've lived here for over 25 years and have seen it all. As a jaded Rockawayite you ask why is this "plan" different?

Well this is the first time a plan has been done for the Rockaway Peninsula that is not led by the city. There are parks and public spaces popping up all over NYC and most of them were started through grass roots efforts.

Send us your comments about other places that serve as inspiration and the stories behind them. We think people will find it really does take a village and Rockaway has been waiting long enough to be recognized.

Biking to work?

Sep 27, 2010 by Elizabeth Manclark

With delays in subway service you spend two hours each day getting to work. So how about biking?

Hundreds of people throughout the city are dusting off their bikes and taking to the streets along the new DOT bike lanes. It would certainly help those of us who need to lose a few pounds. So how 'bout it?
